LIFE AS FRUIT
As a newborn
his mother used to say
he was fresh-picked,
cute as a cucumber,
the apple of her eye.
In jr high, he hated
boxer shorts
choosing instead to wear
tight, bikini
Fruit of the Loom
grape smugglers.
Boys in the locker room
called him
sweet, but
meanwhile, he was
overly concerned with
melons
cherries
and the unpredictable
nature
of bananas.
In college, he
dated a tomato
or two
but married a real
peach of a girl
he called sweet pea.
And as an adult
when he sat down
to hear the results
of the tests
on his pear-shaped body,
the doctor compared the size
of his tumor
to a grapefruit.
