IF I HAD MY CHOICE
if i had my choice
of what to wear
to a party
pajamas and pearls
would suit me fine
sneakers
with laces
to match my
flower-print pajamas
and
if cold
my yellow sweater
with the holes in the elbows
and
pearls of course
HE WEEPS, THIS G.I.
he weeps, this G.I.
midmorning at the Buffalo Airport
as he bends and hugs
his crying, clinging, young daughter
her muffled sobs
her vise-like grip
too soon
he gently disconnects
picks up his pack
wipes a tear from his cheek
turns
and walks to the gate
